Two Augusta residents die in single-vehicle accident; driver charged with homicide

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is charging the driver in a single-vehicle accident  Saturday evening that killed two people.

Stephanie Story, 44, and Steve Leaptrotte, 65, of the 1900 block of Pine Haven Road were occupants of a vehicle traveling east on the 2200 block of Plantation Road near Hephzibah, Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said via a news release Saturday. The vehicle ran east off the road and struck a tree. They were pronounced dead Saturday at 6:50 p.m.

The driver was identified as Francis Porter Jr. by Richmond County Sgt. Caleb Lee via a news release Sunday morning. Porter and a child passenger were hospitalized at Augusta University Medical Center. Lee said, as of Sunday morning, the two were in stable condition.

Lee said Porter is being charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, DUI child endangerment and failure to maintain lane. Porter will be taken into custody once he is released from the hospital.

A man and woman from Augusta died in a single-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon near Hephzibah.

The victims will have an autopsy at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab. The driver of the victims’ vehicle and another passenger were transported to Augusta University Medical Center.

Bowen said via text message Sunday afternoon that there is no info on the hospitalized individuals and the relationship of the victims.
