AUGUSTA, Ga. – With the end of the 2020-21 school year three weeks away, Dr. Steven Flynt got an early start as the new superintendent of the Columbia County School District at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carraway will remain with the school system through June in a consulting capacity.

“I’ve had a great opportunity to get out and see some schools,” Flynt said. “Dr. Carraway has left me in really great hands and I really appreciate that.”

Prior to the board meeting, Flynt presented the 2021-22 budget. Public question and answer periods are scheduled for May 4 from 8 to 10 a.m. and May 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. before the tentative approval at the May 11 board meeting and the final approval at the May 25 board meeting.

Flynt said the COVID-19 protocol will remain in place for the remainder of the school year and shared the school district’s most recent 23 cases reported last week. He pointed out that four out of five high schools have held proms with little impact on the number of positive cases in the district.

The board approved the bid from SMS for new audio enhancement systems. The $3.3 million for the new devices will come from CARES Act Funding, just under the original projected cost of $4.5 million.
