New study links CBD to reduction in Alzheimer’s symptoms

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A new research collaboration between the Dental College of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia is investigating the affect CBD can have on reducing plaque in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients. Based of their previous studies, researchers found that CBD can have beneficial effects on inflammatory reactions in the body; and that Alzheimer’s is a neuro-inflammatory disease.

“Alzheimer’s is one of the main causes, it is the main cause of dementia,” says Immunologist Dr. Babak Baban.

When plaque is over-produced in the brain, microglial cells are in charge of cleaning it up. But health experts say that, for an unknown reason, that’s different for Alzheimer’s patients.

“In Alzheimer’s patients, for some reason we don’t know yet, we don’t understand why these cells don’t do their job properly.”

Researchers discovered in this trial that in mice who have been genetically altered to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s, CBD normalized levels and functions; improving brain cognition.

“CBD increased these two markers, these two factors, so that was the reason we saw improvement and behavior in the inflammatory areas of these animals.”

The goal of this preliminary research is to limit the damage of Alzheimer’s, or at least to delay the disease’s progression.

“This is not for a cure, this is just a step in the right direction towards understanding the mechanism, and also to delay the progression of the disease.”

Dr. Baban believe these alterations and discoveries will be very good for any future research and potential theraputic treatment of Alzheimer’s.
