Want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Augusta-area has plenty of fiestas

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo, which means “the fifth of May.” While the holiday actually commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France, in the United States especially, the day has become one to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage with festive foods, lively music and more.

Here are some Augusta-area businesses holding fiestas, according to their social media channels:

Katerwerks

The catering company is holding a party at The Clubhouse at Jones Creek in Evans. Street tacos of Baja fish, carne asade, or chipotle chicken will be offered with chips and dip in addition to churros and chorizo. There will also be a tequila tasting and live music by the local group The Mason Jars. Reservations are not required, but are recommended by calling  (762) 585-1408, according to marketing director William Bridges.

Vance’s Bakery Bar

The luxury lounge on Broad Street in Augusta is hosting Cinco de Gato where Schrodinger’s Cat improv group will be performing at 8 p.m., said owner Amy Adomo.

Top Dawg Tavern

The restaurant on Washington Road in Augusta is offering $5 tropical margaritas, $7 tavern burgers and happy hour is 4 p.m. until closing. There will also be live music from Augusta musician Adam Thompson who said he will be performing songs in a broad range of styles and musical eras.

Capri Lounge

The bar on Gordon Highway in Augusta is having a Cinco de Mayo party including a complimentary taco bar and several drink specials. The party starts at 4 p.m. Tacos will be served at 6 p.m. and available while supplies last. There will be no cover charge for this event.

El Toro Taqueria

This Mexican restaurant, which has locations on North Liberty Street in Waynesboro and on Gateway Center Boulevard in Grovetown, has been selling commemorative T-shirts. Anyone who wears the shirt to the restaurant on Cinco de Mayo gets 10% off their order.

El Kiosco Mexican Restaurant

The restaurant on Wrightsboro Road in Grovetown will be having several specials on food and drinks like fajitas, flautas, margaritas and sangrias. They also will be selling commemorative, special-edition Cinco de Mayo T-shirts.

Moe’s Southwest Grill

The Evans location in Mullins Crossing and the Aiken location on Whiskey Road are offering free queso cheese and giving away Cinco de Moe’s T-shirts to the first 50 customers. Both locations open at 11 a.m.

Savannah River Brewing Company

The brewery on 5th Street in Augusta will be releasing a new beer, a Mexican lager. There will also be tacos and quesadillas cooked on site.

Taqueria El Ray

For those wanting to celebrate from the comfort of their own homes, this Mexican restaurant on Washington Road in Martinez is offering freshly made margarita mixes to go. They are sold in half-gallon portions for $12.99. The restaurant is also offering drink specials and selling commemorative T-shirts.

Some other restaurants and bars that are offering Cinco de Mayo specials include Cantina Locale on Wrightsboro Road in Augusta, Finch & Fifth on Highland Avenue in Augusta and Teresa’s Mexican Restaurant on West Martintown Road in North Augusta.
