GROVETOWN, Ga. – In honor of Earth Day, students at Baker Place Elementary School are doing their part to promote a clean and green environment. They have been collecting trash as part of a state-wide competition, EarlyAct, to see which school group can recycle the most bags.

Members of Augusta Disposal joined a group of third-graders Thursday to answer all their questions and take their bags over to the recycling center. Students FOX 54 spoke with say they’ve become a lot more environmentally conscious since the start of the pandemic. “I wish once people are done using their masks, like the blue masks, that they would go back and recycle them so they can turn into another mask, like a fabric mask,” Cassidy said.

Students also say they hope their efforts will inspire other members of the community to start recycling. “We’ve been recycling cans, plastic bottles and paper,” Zaida said. “I think other people should recycle when they have the chance to.”
